Excerpt 4
“Jeremy
Irons, do you remember him?”
The
colonel laughed. “I remember him all too well. That boy was always into trouble,
but he could fly. I recommended him for academy training. How’s he doing?”
“Weren’t
you getting reports?”
“Yeah,
but I want the unofficial report.”
“Well,
his first year here, he and I did not get along.”
“Why
was that?”
“He
couldn’t cope with the idea that a girl might fly better than him.”
“So,
they tried to annihilate each other,” Dr. Culp added.
Air
scowled. “I didn’t try to annihilate him.”
“You
broke his arm,” Dr. Culp reminded her.
“He
took my wind-catcher! He’s lucky he didn’t get worse.”
“Maybe
you shouldn’t be telling me this.” Steve wondered why he had never been told
there had been problems with Jeremy.
Air
laid her hand gently on his chest. “Don’t worry, it’s all in the past. We’re
good friends now.”
“Hmmpf,”
Dr. Culp said. “Is that why he was black and blue last week?”
“I
didn’t do that. We were flying the needle and he didn’t give way, so I went
through, and he smashed.” The girl burst out in laughter from the memory and
then stopped as she saw the colonel’s frown. “‘Flying the needle’ is a wind
tunnel game.”
The
colonel relaxed. For a moment, he was afraid this adorable cadet had just
confessed a crime to him and was headed to the brig for endangering the life of
another cadet.
“You’re
done, colonel,” Dr. Culp said and looked at the girl. “Perhaps we should all
leave so the colonel can get dressed now and report to the general.”
“Just
a moment more, Sandy, please?”
Dr.
Culp sighed and shooed everyone else out of the room.
The
colonel sat up. “You know, technically you shouldn’t call the medic by her
first name.”
“She
calls me by my first name.”
“Colonels
can call you anything they wish. However, you should address superior officers
by their rank.” He noticed her eyes rolled as he finished his lecture. He
turned her face so he could nail her with his eyes. “I’m serious. Now, I
allowed you liberties today that will not continue. The next time we meet, my
rank will be respected.”
Her
eyelashes lowered, hiding her eyes for a moment, and then she looked up at him.
“I understand things have to change. But today, before you actually reported to
duty, you liked me, right?”
He
knew he should say he was just being nice, but instead he told her the truth.
“Yeah.” Before he knew what the girl planned, she kissed him. He couldn’t
remember a kiss more pleasant, which is why he let it go on longer than it
should have.
Quickly
breaking it off he attempted to scold her. “Air...”
“I
know.” She stepped back and sighed heavily as if the weight of the world hung
on her shoulders. “Did my mother email you her rules?”
Having
no idea what she was talking about he explained the problem. “I can’t be
involved with a cadet.”
“But
you’d consider it if I wasn’t a cadet?”
“It’s
irrelevant, because you are a cadet.”
Leaning
in between his bare legs, she caressed his chest. “Had I been a captain in the
medics, would you have enjoyed that kiss more?”
It
took all his willpower to set her back away from him. “No.”
“No,
what?” she asked, her voice soft and sultry. “You couldn’t have enjoyed it
more, or you didn’t enjoy it at all?”
“We
aren’t doing this.” Yet, when she leaned into him, he lost his mind and pulled
her against him, kissing her hard. His hands ran beneath her shirt, cupping her
breasts. She groaned and pushed him back down on the table and climbed on top
of him. He had just unzipped her pants when Dr. Culp’s voice cut through the
haze of passion.
“He’s
not quite dressed yet, General,” she called out from the other side of the
door.
The
girl flew off the table and disappeared into the door on his right. He had
barely pulled on his pants when another door opened.
