Being forced to leave one’s country and shipped
to America is a terrible beginning for any marriage. In fact, Anne and Aaron
are not legally married, since Anne refused to sign the marriage certificate.
Certain Anne will love her new life, Aaron pays
off her servants, shuts down her home, and takes her to America against her
wishes. He quickly discovers that an angry, defiant Anne is more than his heart
can endure. If he could turn the ship around, he would have done so. Instead,
he assigns Jacko to deal with the hell-cat.
When they finally arrive in Charlotte, North
Carolina, Aaron no longer wishes to marry Anne. Still he cannot send her across
the ocean in the icy winter waters. It is far too dangerous. So, the angry
she-cat remains ‘his wife’ as they make the long journey home to his ranch in
the Kentucky hills. Having no alternative, Anne agrees to remain six months on
his ranch, until it is safe to cross the ocean again. Then, come summer, if she
wishes, she can return to England.
Unfortunately, when they finally reach Aaron’s
ranch, he discovers over half his horses have been sold on the cheap, his ranch
is in disrepair, and the man he had put in charge is now declaring he is the
owner of the property. His anger towards his ‘wife’ is no longer his main
concern. He must reclaim his property, rehire his men, and rebuild his ranch.
With winter arriving, if he doesn’t turn matters around quickly, they will all
die.
Excerpt
“Then why do you call yourself by another name?”
Anne paused, hoping the older woman would silence her daughter’s
impertinent question, but she did not. Instead, she also seemed to be waiting
for an answer.
“It was a slip of the tongue. I have been a Rothschild all my life.
One can hardly fault me for a moment of forgetfulness.”
Diana smirked again. “If he were my husband, I certainly would not forget
it.”
“Now, dear,” Mary Dobbs reached over and patted the girl’s leg.
“Not everyone has your amazing mind.”
Stunned and outraged by the woman’s insinuation that her
‘forgetfulness’ equated to ‘dimwittedness,’ Anne searched for a reply she could
make and remain a lady. Unable to find one, she lifted her head and peered out
the carriage window, pretending they did not exist at all.
Fortunately, the ride to the inn was short. Her foot stomped
impatiently, waiting for the driver to open the door.
“Why don’t you get out?” Diana finally asked in exasperation.
Having enough of the young girl’s impertinence, Anne nailed her
with a look of contempt and anger. “A lady waits to be assisted from a
carriage. But of course, you would not know that.”
Diana rolled her eyes. “Well, seeing as how I don’t know about such
things, I’ll go before you.”
As she crawled over Anne, her heavy boot crushed down on Anne’s
slipper. When Diana opened the door, Anne pushed her rear-end with all her
might, while declaring “You are on my foot, you clumsy cow!” The girl would
have gone head first into the mud, if not for the timely arrival of Aaron who
secured Diana in his arms and saw her safely righted.
He then reached in and offered his hand to the older woman,
apologizing for his wife’s behavior.
“Do not apologize for me,” Anne growled.
Aaron glared her into silence. “You are causing a scene, Anne. It
is most unbecoming.” He grabbed her by her elbow and pulled her forcefully from
the carriage. He then politely motioned for all the ladies to precede him into
the inn.
